Edwardian villas, inter-war semis and forest-edge plots
Wanstead, Woodford Green and South Woodford hold substantial Edwardian and inter-war houses on deep plots, many backing onto or near Epping Forest and Wanstead Flats. Ilford, Seven Kings and Barkingside are denser, with Edwardian terraces and inter-war semis on regular gardens of a good size. Across the borough side access is common and frontages are usually wide enough to park on, so driveway work and larger rear schemes are both routine. The gardens here are old enough to have real structure in them — hedges, established trees, mature shrub borders — rather than being blank rectangles.
