Clay, gravel and gardens with real history in them

The ground is London Clay in most of the borough, with river terrace gravels along the Wandle valley. On the larger Wimbledon plots the dominant technical factor is again mature trees: they draw a great deal of moisture from clay through summer, drying it unevenly and moving rigid paving laid within their influence, and they are frequently protected by Tree Preservation Orders or by conservation area status. The right response is to survey the trees first, design foundations to stay outside root protection areas, and use permeable no-dig construction where a surface genuinely must sit closer.

Conservation areas and knowing what to keep

Wimbledon Village and several other areas are conservation areas with a strong established character, where street-facing walls, gates, railings and front garden surfaces matter and trees are automatically protected. The bigger judgement on these plots, though, is editorial. A garden planted over eighty years contains structure that cannot be bought — mature specimens, established hedges, a settled shape — alongside things that are genuinely past their best. Recording what is there and deciding deliberately what stays produces a far better result than clearing the site and starting again.

How do you renovate a large mature garden without ruining it?
Survey before you clear. On an established Wimbledon plot the trees, hedges and the shape of the space are the most valuable things in it and the slowest to replace. We record what exists, distinguish between planting that is genuinely finished and planting that simply needs hard pruning and a few years, and design the new hard landscaping to work around the good structure. Wholesale clearance is quick, cheap and almost always a mistake here.
Can I lay a terrace under a mature tree?
Close to one, sometimes — but not by digging a normal sub-base through its roots. Roots spread well past the canopy and are easily killed by excavation, and if the tree is protected you need consent before cutting any. The workable approach is a no-dig construction built up over the existing ground with a permeable surface, which keeps the root plate intact and lets water and air through. Anything rigid and sealed over roots will fail on both counts.
What are the constraints in Wimbledon Village?
Conservation area status is the main one, and it bears most on what can be seen from the street: boundary walls, gates, railings, front garden surfaces and materials in keeping with the area. Trees are protected automatically, requiring six weeks' notice before most work. Rear gardens are far less constrained. Designing the street-facing elements to the established character from the outset is much more productive than submitting something generic.
