Chiswick is period terrace and villa, much of it in conservation areas, with the long narrow rear gardens that go with the type. Thames gravel, and why it changes the build

Much of southern Hounslow sits on Thames river terrace gravels rather than London Clay, and it makes a genuine difference. Gravel drains freely, moves far less with the seasons, and gives a firm formation to build off — which usually means a more predictable sub-base and a lower risk of the seasonal movement that lifts paving on clay. It also makes soakaways work well, so permeable driveways and terraces drain properly rather than backing up. We still dig a trial hole rather than assume, because the boundary between gravel and clay is not neatly drawn on the ground.

Conservation, listing and protected trees

Chiswick and Bedford Park carry significant conservation area coverage, and Bedford Park in particular has a very large number of listed houses, so front gardens, boundary walls, hedges, gates and railings are all matters where consent and local character matter. Trees are protected automatically in conservation areas and by Tree Preservation Orders elsewhere, and this part of west London has a lot of mature ones. Rear gardens are generally far less constrained. We check the designation for the specific address at survey and design the street-facing elements to what the area will actually support.

Can I replace the front garden of a Bedford Park house with parking?
It should be approached very carefully. Bedford Park is a conservation area with a high concentration of listed buildings, and the hedged, planted front gardens are a large part of what is being protected — hard standing that removes them is often resisted, and on a listed property consent issues arise as well. Elsewhere in Chiswick the picture varies street by street. We establish the designation for the actual address before designing anything street-facing.
Is Thames gravel better to build on than London Clay?
For paving, generally yes. Gravel drains freely and is far more dimensionally stable through the seasons than clay, which shrinks in dry summers and swells in winter. That means less seasonal movement under a rigid surface and soakaways that actually work. It does not remove the need for a properly excavated and compacted sub-base — it just means the ground underneath is helping rather than working against you.
What suits a long narrow Chiswick garden?
Anything that interrupts the length. A single path straight down the middle of a long thin plot emphasises exactly the proportion you want to disguise.
