Substantial suburban plots, and green belt beyond
Bromley, Beckenham, Chislehurst, Petts Wood and West Wickham are largely inter-war and post-war suburbia built at low density, with detached and semi-detached houses on deep plots — rear gardens well over a hundred square metres are routine and considerably larger is common. Chislehurst and parts of Orpington add older, larger houses on grounds that read as small landscapes. Beyond the built-up area the borough runs into green belt and open countryside. Nearly everything has side access and a frontage that takes a car, so machinery reaches the back and the full range of work is practical.
